In the third volume of their travel essay series, the authors explore multicultural Tsurumi in Kanagawa, tracing the area’s history of migration and highlighting a long-standing multicultural society that challenges Japan’s enduring myth of homogeneity. The volume also includesnpersonal journeys to Awaji Island in Hyōgo and Komagane in Nagano.
UGUISU is the creative duo of Michiyo Miyake and Nicholas Marshall. It originally began as a translation team, and evolved into a co-authoring venture. Their first volume, Postcard from Amami, was published in 2024.
MICHIYO MIYAKE is a writer and translator born in Japan and based in Australia. Her recent publications include the novella Green Metal: Life in Tokyo during the Nuclear Catastrophe (2024).
Nicholas Marshall is an editor and writer based in Sydney. He has a PhD in applied linguistics and was a professor of English for Academic Purposes in the postgraduate school of Meiji University in Tokyo. He also taught academic English at Tsuda and Waseda Universities in Japan, and Macquarie University in Sydney.
