UGUISU BOOKS
UGUISU is the creative duo of Michiyo Miyake and Nicholas Marshall. Based in Sydney, we offer quality Japanese-English translation, editing, proofreading and sensitivity reading for writers, artists and academics. Our experience spans a variety of materials, including fiction, nonfiction, artist books, academic papers and website content.
UGUISUは、三宅美千代とニコラス・マーシャルによる翻訳・制作デュオ。オーストラリア・シドニーを拠点に、作家、アーティスト、研究者のために、高品質な日英・英日翻訳、編集・校正、センシティヴィティ・リーディングのサービスを提供しています。2015年に活動を開始し、小説、ノンフィクション、アーティストブック、学術論文、ウェブサイトコンテンツなど、さまざまな媒体の翻訳経験があります。
UGUISU (oo-goo-ee-soo) :
UGUISU (鶯) refers to the Japanese bush warbler, a bird celebrated for its clear, melodic call. In haiku—a traditional form of Japanese poetry—the uguisu is a classic symbol of spring, its song marking the changing of the seasons. We launched an independent publishing label UGUISU BOOKS in 2023. We create books and zines exploring social issues in Japan and Australia, the history of the Asia Pacific region, and the experiences of living between different cultures and languages. Having grown up in Tokyo and Sydney, Michiyo’s return to Australia in 2016 led to a deeper awareness of the shared social challenges faced by Japan and Australia, as well as the gaps between information available in Japanese and English. Through publishing in both languages, we aim to bridge these gaps, connect conversations across borders, and foster greater understanding and solidarity.
2023年に独立出版レーベル「UGUISU BOOKS」を立ち上げました。日本とオーストラリアにおける社会問題や、アジア太平洋地域の歴史、複数の文化や言語の「あいだ」で生きる経験をテーマに、本やZINEの制作を行なっています。東京とシドニーで育った三宅は、2016年にオーストラリアへ再移住したことをきっかけに、日豪両国に共通する社会的課題や、日本語と英語で交わされる情報や議論のあいだにある隔たりを意識するようになりました。英語と日本語で発信することで、異なる場所で生まれる声や視点をつなぎ、国境を越えた対話と、私たちが共有する課題への理解や連帯を深めることを目指しています。
