Stare into My Fear is a prose poetry zine by writer and translator Michiyo Miyake, inspired by her experience attending live testimonial events by former “comfort women” of the Japanese military during World War II.
Confronted with the immediacy and physical presence of these testimonies—and the profound impact of hearing survivors speak first-hand—Miyake was compelled to write this work. The poem reflects on memory, trauma, and witnessing, as well as the emotional weight carried by those who listen.
Printed on a single sheet of A4 paper and folded into a compact format, the zine offers a tactile reading experience shaped by the act of unfolding and viewing its pages.
Michiyo Miyake: Writer and translator, born in Japan and based in Australia. She hosts the translation duo UGUISU with Nicholas Marshall and the publishing label UGUISU BOOKS.
『Stare into My Fear』作家・翻訳者の三宅 美千代による散文詩ZINEです。第二次世界大戦期に旧日本軍の「慰安婦」とされた女性たちによる証言集会に参加した体験から着想を得て制作されました。
証言のもつ切実さや語り手の身体的な存在感、それを直接聞くことの衝撃と重さに直面した経験が、本作を書くきっかけとなっており、記憶やトラウマ、「証言を聴くこと」、それを受け取る側が抱える感情の重さについて問いかけます。
1枚のA4用紙に印刷され、コンパクトに折りたたまれた作品です。ページを開き、広げていくプロセスそのものが、触覚的な読書体験をもたらします。
三宅 美千代：作家・翻訳者。日本出身、シドニー在住。最近の著作に、2011年の原発事故時の東京での生活を記録した小説『GREEN METAL』(2024)、オーストラリアの難民収容所がある島々の歴史をテーマにしたZINE『spiral history：TIDE』(2023, アーティスト呉夏枝と共同制作) などがある。
