The Vision You Saw, That I Cannot See is a visual poster zine by writer and translator Michiyo Miyake, tracing the imagined inner landscape of a Japanese woman whose life crossed borders during a period of profound social and political change.
The work follows the journey of a woman who migrated from a fishing village in Kyushu to Sumatra in the 1930s, driven by poverty into overseas labour at a time when many women were subjected to exploitation and trafficking. Her story unfolds across colonial Southeast Asia and continues through the Pacific War, when she was interned at the Tatura Internment Camp in Australia.
Printed on delicate calligraphy paper, the double-sided colour poster unfolds from a translucent envelope. The poster features images inspired by the woman’s birthplace on the Shimabara Peninsula, Sumatra, and Oceanian landscapes connected to her journey. The interplay of paper, image, and unfolding creates a quiet reflection on landscape, history, and memory.
Michiyo Miyake is a writer and translator born in Japan and based in Australia. Her recent publications include the novella Green Metal: Life in Tokyo during the Nuclear Catastrophe (2024) and spiral history: TIDE (2023), a collaborative zine with artist Haji Oh exploring the histories of islands where Australian detention centres are located.

本作は、1930年代に長崎の漁村からスマトラへ渡ったひとりの女性の人生を描きます。貧困によって海外へ渡ることを余儀なくされた彼女の旅は、当時、多くの女性が搾取や人身売買の対象となった時代背景と重なります。その軌跡は、植民地下の東南アジアを経て、太平洋戦争期のオーストラリア、タトゥーラ収容所へと続いていきます。
書道紙に印刷された両面カラー・ポスターは、半透明の封筒に収められています。ポスターには、女性の出身地である島原半島やスマトラ島、そして彼女の旅に連なるオセアニアの風景を題材にしたイメージが描かれています。紙、イメージ、そして広げる行為が重なり合い、風景、歴史、記憶への静かな省察を生み出します。
